Windows 12 Preview Build Now Available to Insiders
Microsoft has released the first public preview build of Windows 12 to Windows Insider Program participants, giving users their first hands-on experience with the next generation of Windows. The update brings substantial AI integration, a modernized interface, and significant performance improvements.
Copilot Becomes the Operating System Core
Windows 12 represents Microsoft’s vision of an AI-first operating system, with Copilot deeply integrated into every aspect of the user experience. The AI assistant can now control system settings, manage files, and automate complex tasks through natural language commands.
The new “Copilot Actions” feature allows users to create custom automations by describing what they want in plain English. For example, users can say “Every Monday morning, organize my downloads folder and create a summary of my calendar” and Copilot will create and execute the workflow.
Microsoft has also introduced “Recall 2.0,” an enhanced version of the controversial feature that can remember and search everything you’ve done on your PC. The new version addresses privacy concerns by providing granular controls and on-device processing.
Redesigned User Interface
Windows 12 features a significantly updated visual design that Microsoft calls “Windows Fluid.” The new design language includes floating windows with rounded corners, translucent panels, and dynamic animations that respond to user interactions.
The Start Menu has been redesigned with a focus on productivity, featuring AI-powered suggestions, recent files organized by project, and quick access to frequently used features. The taskbar now supports widgets that can display real-time information.
A new “Focus Mode” transforms the desktop into a distraction-free environment, hiding notifications and non-essential UI elements while keeping important tools accessible.
Performance and Efficiency
Microsoft claims Windows 12 offers up to 30% faster boot times and improved battery life on laptops. The new “CoreOS” foundation reduces system overhead and improves responsiveness, particularly on systems with modern hardware.
The update also introduces intelligent resource management that learns user patterns and pre-loads frequently used applications, reducing launch times significantly.
Hardware Requirements
Windows 12 raises the minimum hardware requirements, requiring TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and a compatible 64-bit processor. NPU (Neural Processing Unit) hardware is strongly recommended for full AI feature support, though basic functionality works without dedicated AI hardware.
Microsoft has confirmed that PCs meeting Windows 11 requirements will receive Windows 12, though some AI features may be limited on older hardware.
Release Timeline
The Windows 12 preview is available now to Windows Insider Program members on the Canary and Dev channels. Microsoft expects to release the final version in late 2026, with a gradual rollout to existing Windows 11 users.
Enterprise customers will have access to extended testing periods, with Microsoft promising 18 months of parallel support for Windows 11 after Windows 12’s release.
