For the second time in a year, China has blocked Google’s YouTube service, although Chinese authorities won’t give any details as to why. “Many people have a false impression that the Chinese government fears the Internet. In fact, it is just the opposite,†a Foreign Ministry spokesman told Reuters. The spokesman said he didn’t know that the service was being blocked. China most recently restricted access to YouTube a year ago, when videos of clashes between police and protesters in Tibet surfaced on the site. According to various reports, a video showing Chinese police beating Tibetans was posted by a Tibetan exile group last week. China requires online video broadcasters to report and delete videos that hurt the country’s reputation or disrupt social stability.
